The Post About Ben's 1st Birthday Party

Last Saturday we had some family over for a birthday celebration for Baby Ben. Can I even still call him "baby"? Not sure. But I still am. A quick recap in pictures. Then on to the developmental stuff.

"Our Little Pumpkin is Turning One"

The pumpkin shirt I bought for Ben to wear was slightly evil looking. But, it was the best I could do. What with a pumpkin theme and all. And, by the way, Ben will have a pumpkin themed birthday party until he is old enought to beg for another theme. And then? We will do a football or fall harvest theme.....with pumpkins.

He is developing quite a little personality. Usually content and happy. In fact, whenever we pick him up from the nursery at church, whether it is Wednesday or Sunday, we always hear the same comment, "He is so happy and easy. Just very content." Yep. That is Ben. Although he can have some dramatics when he doesn't get his way or is unusually tired.

One night everyone at the table had a drink with a straw. Upon realizing he was the only one with a sippy cup, Ben cried and carried on until he was given a drink with a straw! I think this is a result of being number two. Everything Andrew has, Ben has to have also. He just pitched a small fit after leaving the bank this afternoon, when Andrew was eating a sucker and I would not let him have one! He is a mess!

And a monkey. I have heard of "climbers". Andrew was not one. Ben? Is a monkey. He is able to climb the ladder steps of our swing set, get on top, turn around backwards, and slide down the slide. By himself. Of course, I stand with my hand on his back. But he does all the work. Andrew mastered this when he was two. Ben thinks he is one going on three.

He has six words, bye-bye, ball, bottle, hello, uh-oh, mama, daddy, and no. (Actually, I just counted. He has eight words.) He loves to tell me no, but when I use the word to correct him?  A very dramatic quivering lip followed by real tears.

He is still taking two naps a day......about three or four days a week. The other days, he cries during his morning nap (he likes to throw his loveys out), or we are busy and he misses them. (BTW....missing naps was NOT an option with number one!). He does okay missing a morning nap, but he does not make up for it with an extended afternoon nap. And only a 1.5 hour nap for a one year old, does not make mama happy. So I am not really sure what to do about the morning nap situation. We are just powering through day by day.

We are in the process of dropping the bottle. And we made it to 11.5 months of nursing!! Weaning wasn't as hard as I thought because he did it for me. Already very independent.

He still enjoys cuddling after waking up, but refuses to be rocked to sleep. He likes to crawl in my lap when he is tired and lay his head on my shoulder.

Ben is pretty much over the stranger anxiety and now reaches for those who keep him regularly. Not so sure how I feel about that ;)!

And now for the stats. I would have had them a week earlier but, I looked at the calendar last Saturday to discover that he had his 12 month well baby check that Friday. Yep. I completely forgot about his 12 month well baby check! This was even after I confirmed with the peds office on Thursday that we would be there early on Friday morning. So we re-scheduled for this morning. Let's see now if I can remember them without having to go find the sheet with all that information recorded. His weight was around 21 pounds and he was about 30 inches long. There.

This past year has flown by and we have loved every minute of having number two in our lives! He is a blessing and a joy and he is going to have a heart for God. I am excited to see how his personality continues to develop this upcoming year. I think I am going to have my hands full........
