First up, "thank you". He is pretty good about saying this unprompted. If once or twice a day he says "thank you", without me asking him to say it, we are very proud. He is only 22 months, you know!
One morning this week, we were playing with a rubber ball (you know the kind that you always begged your mama to get you at the grocery store, and she always answered with a 'no'. yeah. that kind.). Andrew wanted me to bounce the ball very high. Like touching the ceiling high. Always up for a challenge, and a little competition with myself, I obliged. Call me indulgent.
Not to miss a teaching opportunity (I didn't go to graduate school for three years for nothin'. Thanks Mama!), I decided to ask Andrew to say "please" and "thank you" while we played.
It went like this:
Andrew handed me the ball, "ball mama".
Mama: Say please.
Andrew: Peas.
Mama bounces the ball. Almost touching the ceiling. Bringing squeals from the young one. Which means that we will now play this game for an hour.
Mama: Say thank you.
Andrew: Dank-u, ball.
Because, you know, mama obviously had nothing to do with the ball bouncing so high. It was all the ball. Thanks, ball. Thanks. You're the best.
