We had been exploring the grounds of Serenbe all day. The first weekend in April 2009, it was beautiful weather. Andrew was having a great time tagging along after his older cousins as they played in the tree house, jumped on the trampoline, watched farm animals and ran around the property.
Rob and I made sure to always stay a few steps behind our 21 month old. Especially as we began to walk over the bridge of a lake.
It all happened so fast.
I heard the older cousin say, "Ohhh, a spider web. "
Then, I saw a flash of white, that was my son, fall through a gaping hole in the bridge into the water, eight feet below.
Rob did not even hesitate. He easily slipped through the hole and jumped in to save Andrew. By the time I made it off the bridge and to the edge of the water, I saw Rob gain his bearings in the water and say, "I can't see him." Neither could I.
A flash of instant terror/panic/dread came over me. And then Rob plunged his hands into the water where Andrew was last seen floating face down, and miraculously pulled our son out of the water.
Thankfully, Andrew screamed at his first breath. All was okay....except our weekend. Which was officially ruined after such a traumatic event.
