Been There, Done That

Being a first time new mom, I have come to realize that most, if not all, of Andrew's cute "tricks" and peculiarities are common for babies his age. This is comforting to know that moms everywhere are struggling with their children at 5pm (I think a mom came up with the saying, "It's 5 o'clock somewhere"), and that it is common for babies his age to begin "playing" with their food.

That being said, I know that other moms are struggling with, or have struggled with, two issues I am having with Andrew. So, I need your advice, your tricks, your "been there, done that".

1). Changing his diaper has become a wrestling match. He thinks it is a funny game to constantly turn over on his changing table while I am changing his diaper. I, on the other hand, do not think it is funny when he kicks over the wipe warmer and stack of diapers, sticks his foot in his poopy diaper, and then tries to roll over. This is before I even get the diaper on. Nope, not funny to mama! I usually leave the changing table sweating and pondering the necesity of pants. That's right, lately Andrew has been hanging around the house in a shirt and his diaper. That is about all I can handle. I have tried to give him a toy to play with at the changing table, but the little rascal throws it on the ground and then tries to look for it.....rolling over!! Okay, mama's, give me your advice......please! (because I am beginning to wander if shirts are necessary.....)

2). Finger foods. Andrew has eaten chicken nuggets or waffles for about 5 meals in a row. Now, he loves both....but, surely it can't be good for him to only eat chicken nuggets and waffles. Oh, and he has to have applesauce at every meal. What are some other finger foods that worked well for your children? I have tried soft, diced veggies and fruit, but he only enjoyed squishing them in his hands. Of course, that was a few weeks ago, and a few weeks can mean a world of maturity. Maybe I should try them again.......when I recover from the latest wrestling match.

Can't wait to hear from the voices of experience!!

I'm sorry, I know I shouldn't be laughing at your pain. And I'm really not. I'm laughing because I know exactly what you're going through. Eli HATES having his diaper changed.

To answer your question, I'll never forget the time I picked Eli up from the nursery and the workers were talking about how hard it is to change him. I told them about my technique of laying him on the floor, putting one leg over his belly to hold him down, holding his legs with one hand and changing him with the other. I noticed them looking at me like I was crazy, but I bet they tried it the next week when I was gone!

Now when I change him, all I have to do is put my leg over his belly and he lays still. I don't have to literally hold him down with my leg anymore.

It is so funny that Hannah said to put him on the floor! That's the first thing I thought of!!! Changing tables are nice at first but then you just have to get a better angle!! I think my children only wore pants when in public...of course if they hit the stage where they figure out something is down there that is squishy, then of course pants and duct tape are a necessity!

As far as foods go - the boy isn't dumb. You will probably have to sneak in all the "good for you" foods. Then you have to start the "if you eat one bite of this (veg/fruit), then you can have one bite of this(waffle)" Now, all my children liked (and still do) the Green Giant Kitchen Slice Green Beans in the can. I always add Goya ham seasoning for flavor.

Oh, and one more thing. When my children don't want any "good things" on their plate, I make them eat spoonfuls according to their age - works really well with 2-7 year olds...Hannah, age 10, not so much

Funny, I was thinking of using the floor to change him, too. Just the angle is better...sitting in front of him. That way, you can wrestle if you have to.
The toy thing never worked for us. Allison would sling it across the room, too. Once she got older, we'd play "where's your nose, where's your head, etc".

As far as finger foods, my girls liked the Gerber toast stick things. Quite messy, but it was something for them to gnaw on and they liked them. The fruit puffs, too. Are those Gerber? Green beans and steamed carrots were a hit, too.

Good luck!

David was a wiggler and I would pop his leg to just get his attention and say in my meanest mommy voice, "NO!" He got the message eventually. You could try it with or without the leg popping, whichever one fits you best. Eventually they will figure it out. They don't generally like mean mommy voices!

Ah, the food issue. That's a tough one. Dr. Dobson says to give them food, if they won't eat it then refrigerate it and serve it next meal. That pretty much works with mine. Will he still eat baby food? You could go back to that if he will still eat it. David would eat it until he was almost three. (and still will ocassionally) YEah, waffles and chucken nuggets do not a nutritionally sound child make. Good luck with it. I will say this, just remember that his will is easier to bend now than it will be at 3,5,12, etc.

Hang in there! Sounds like you are doing a good job with him.
