A Week of Firsts

Last week he was a baby, this week he became a "big boy"! He had his first day at Mother's Morning Out (school), his first haircut, and his first week of dropping his morning nap.
These first two pictures are "before" shots of his hair:

And, the "after" shots....I can't believe how much older he looks after the haircut! (And, you gotta love the zebra print cape)

His first haircut went really well.... no crying from Andrew OR mama! He smiled and laughed at the beginning of the cut, but was 'completely over it' by the end. You know, already too cool for school! Rob insisted that we use his barber for the first cut. Because, you know, men and boys get their hair cut at a barbershop and not at a salon! And, this was the real deal barbershop, too. Complete with older gentlemen who come to the shop every morning to drink coffee and discuss current events (i.e. gossip). I was half wondering when the quartet would appear......

Andrew's first day of school did not go as smoothly--note the pitiful face in the picture below. I know what you are thinking, "How could you leave that poor baby crying?" (Okay.... so maybe only the grandmoms are thinking this!) It was just a little difficult to leave him, but I knew it had to done; I had to set a precedent on the first day (and, I didn't want to be that mom....I am still trying to impress the teachers!). The director assured me that they would call if he did not calm down in 30-45 minutes.

And, I never got a phone call!! And, I got a ton of work done around the house and in the yard. And, I made dinner for two nights and banana nut muffins! So, it was definitely worth the little bit of crying. He did better today. Only a few sniffles before I handed him over to the teacher and gave him his puppy. Andrew is also dropping his morning nap. (This font change is bothering me, and I don't know how to change it back!) The past few weeks have been a nightmare getting him to go down for both his naps (crying, throwing his puppy out of the crib....repeatedly, not showing the usual sleepy cues when it is nap time, etc). Then, last week he would refuse to go down for an afternoon nap. He would stay up crying the length of his afternoon nap. So this week, we dropped the morning nap. I knew that being at school two days a week would lighten my "entertaining a cranky one year old who is missing his morning nap" load at least a little. And, while we both have been tired and cranky by the end of the day, he goes down beautifully for his afternoon nap and for bedtime!

This week has been exhausting, but we survived. And, Andrew is growing up--sniff, sniff (from the grandmoms, of course!).

Aw, Christy! That makes me sniffle a bit. :( I always wanted to hold off on the first haircut, because they look so "big" afterward! I'm glad you got a lot done during MMO and I'm sure Andrew is having a blast. :)

Good for you. You need that time away from him to give you a little breathing room. Yay for MMO!

We are dropping the morning nap too. It's nice when you have somewhere to go, but it can be a little painful when you're at home all morning with nothing special to entertain them when they're really a little tired. Sometimes I still put Eli in his crib for about thirty minutes to give us both a break, but he doesn't sleep and mess up his afternoon nap. Those days go the best.
